Abstract: This essay discusses a translation problem encountered while translating quotations by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. In one English statement, the word “GOD” is used as an acronym for “Generator, Operator, Destroyer,” forming an elegant and pedagogical condensation of the Hindu triad Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — creation, preservation, and dissolution. While this wordplay functions convincingly in English, it cannot be transferred literally into many other languages without distortion. Using a Persian translation as a concrete example, the essay argues that fidelity in translation should prioritize meaning over formal imitation. It proposes functional explication as a responsible strategy for translating spiritual texts and reflects on translation as an interpretive and ethical practice rather than a purely technical one.

Der Beitrag behandelt ein spezifisches Übersetzungsproblem, das bei der Übertragung englischsprachiger spiritueller Aussagen auftritt. Ausgangspunkt ist eine Formulierung, in der das Wort GOD als Akronym für Generator, Operator, Destroyer gelesen wird – eine didaktisch gelungene englische Verdichtung der hinduistischen Dreiheit Brahma, Vishnu und Shiva als Ursprung, Erhaltung und Auflösung des Einen. Während dieses Wortspiel im Englischen überzeugend funktioniert, lässt es sich in vielen anderen Sprachen nicht ohne Bedeutungsverlust oder Verzerrung übertragen. Anhand einer konkreten persischen Übersetzung wird gezeigt, warum in solchen Fällen die Treue zum gemeinten Sinn wichtiger ist als die Bewahrung der formalen Struktur. Der Text plädiert für eine explizierende, sinnorientierte Übersetzungsstrategie und versteht Übersetzen nicht als rein technische Übertragung, sondern als interpretative und verantwortliche Denkform.
