Description

This repository contains the final report and supporting materials for the study “Modelling Decarbonization Pathways in the Power Sector in Ghana.” The analysis applies the open-source energy system optimisation model OSeMOSYS to evaluate least-cost pathways for decarbonising Ghana’s power sector over the period 2022–2050.

Three scenarios are examined: a Business-as-Usual (BAU) pathway, an Accelerated Renewable Transition (RET) scenario, and a Net Zero pathway aligned with Ghana’s climate target of net-zero emissions by 2060. An additional sensitivity analysis explores a delayed Net Zero target in 2070 to assess trade-offs between peak annual investment requirements and cumulative system costs.

Results highlight the limitations of current development trends, the insufficiency of renewable expansion alone, and the higher—but manageable—investment needs associated with deep decarbonisation. The study was developed as part of the Energy Modelling Platform for Africa (EMP-A) 2026 capacity-building programme and aims to support evidence-based power-sector planning and climate policy in Ghana
