A combined Python and IDL SPEDAS environment is required to execute the scripts. The Python scripts rely on standard scientific libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, Pandas, cdflib, netCDF4 and others), which can be installed via pip. THEMIS data processing is handled by IDL scripts that require the SPEDAS framework (v6.1, https://themis.igpp.ucla.edu/software.shtml) to be installed and configured. The code for generating each figure is located in its respective code/[figure-name] directory. The scripts are designed to be run from within these directories, and they will load data files expected to be present in the same folder. The analysis was validated using Python 3.13 and IDL v8.8. The radar software toolkit (RST) used to produce SuperDARN convection maps is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7467337. The scripts run by IDL and Python require no installation time, and their runtime is completed within 1 to 5 minutes.
Source Data
The datasets utilized in this study are publicly available. OMNI and THEMIS data were obtained from NASA's Coordinated Data Analysis Web (CDAWeb, http://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/). The AMPERE field-aligned current data are available from https://ampere.jhuapl.edu/browse/. The geomagnetic indices from SuperMAG were accessed via https://supermag.jhuapl.edu/indices/. SuperDARN data can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.20383/102.0447.
IDL SPEDAS and source code are run on these dataset to produce the final curated data used to generate all figures. These data have been processed into (.csv) files, which can be viewed directly with software such as Microsoft Excel. These final plotting data for each figure are located in Source Data/[figure name]/.
