Description

Heritage tourism serves as a vital instrument for linking cultural preservation with community development, particularly within the context of temple heritage in South India. This study investigates how heritage tourism centered on the Chola temples in Tamil Nadu contributes to community engagement and economic empowerment. Through a qualitative review of secondary sources, the research examines the role of local communities in promoting, maintaining, and managing Chola temple tourism, with emphasis on inclusive development strategies. It further analyzes the economic dimensions of heritage tourism by assessing its influence on local livelihoods, encompassing employment creation, entrepreneurship, and skill enhancement. Additionally, the study explores challenges affecting equitable benefit distribution and sustainable participation among stakeholders. To complement secondary analysis, stakeholder perspectives are examined to provide a grounded understanding of community involvement and perceived empowerment outcomes. The findings are expected to highlight how heritage tourism around Chola temples can serve as a catalyst for both cultural sustainability and socio-economic progress in Tamil Nadu.
