XML (in) Publishing
Description
This presentation was given at the CRAFT-OA summer school for journal editors 2025 in Coimbra, Portugal. It provides an overview of the XML use in academic publishing and covers the following topics:
- Introduction to XML: presents the ecosystem of X-Technologies and key XML uses.
- XML for Presentation: outlines the use of XML for presenting the data in journal and scholarly digital editions workflows.
- XML for Data Exchange: touches upon the indexing services, indexing formats (DC, JATS, DOAJ, etc.) and indexing methods used (push, pull, crawl). Basic XML (Dublin Core) elements are described as well as challenges in their mapping on other formats.
- XML for Data Quality: specifies how the quality of XML data can be assured using syntax check, namespaces and schema languages (XSD).
- OAI PMH queries and responses: the syntax of the OAI-PMH queries is analyzed, and sample responses examined in Dublin Core, MARCXML, OPENAIRE, and JATS.
