Digital Archives: Institutional Repositories, Intellectual Property Rights, Cybersecurity, and Privacy in India

This study explores the challenges and opportunities associated with digital archives and institutional repositories in India, focusing on intellectual property rights (IPR), cybersecurity, and privacy. The purpose is to examine the legal, technical, and ethical dimensions of managing digital repositories, emphasizing their role in preserving knowledge and cultural heritage. The scope includes India’s institutional repositories, with a survey of 230 library professionals to gather insights on IPR compliance, cybersecurity measures, and privacy concerns. Methodologically, the study employs an online survey to collect data, which is analyzed to identify key issues and trends. Findings reveal significant challenges, including copyright infringement risks, inadequate cybersecurity preparedness, and privacy vulnerabilities, alongside policy gaps in India’s legal framework. The study highlights the need for integrated approaches, such as strengthening legal frameworks, adopting advanced technologies, and enhancing capacity building. Originality lies in its focus on the Indian context, combining theoretical analysis with empirical data from library professionals, offering practical recommendations for improving the management of digital repositories. This research contributes to the discourse on digital archiving by addressing the unique challenges faced by Indian institutions and proposing actionable solutions to ensure sustainable and secure knowledge preservation.
