Mobile GIS XLSForm for In-Situ Assessment of Coastal Protection Structures
Description
This repository contains the XLSForm-based mobile GIS survey instrument developed for the in-situ assessment of coastal protection structures, as described in the manuscript 'A Mobile GIS Framework for In-Situ Measurement of Coastal Defence Conditions: Development and Application in Kerala, India'.
Veeravalli, S.G., Murali, M.G., Alluri, S.K.R. et al. A mobile GIS framework for in-situ measurement of coastal defence conditions: development and application in Kerala, India. Appl Geomat 18, 93 (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s12518-026-00744-9
The XLSForm implements the complete survey logic, including hierarchical structure selection, skip logic, validation rules, mandatory fields, GPS capture, and multimedia requirements. The form is designed for deployment using Kobo Toolbox and supports offline field data collection with subsequent synchronization.
The repository is intended to support methodological reproducibility and reuse of the data-collection framework. While the field data collected using this form are subject to institutional restrictions and are not publicly shared, the survey logic and deployment workflow are openly provided to enable replication and adaptation in other coastal regions.
Contents:
- XLSForm (.xlsx) implementing the full survey hierarchy and skip/validation logics.
- User guide describing form deployment, GPS configuration, and data export to GIS.
P.S.: We used KoboToolbox and this form in 2022/2023, and the rules around the number of submissions/storage have changed in KoboToolbox since then. Please check https://www.kobotoolbox.org/ for updated
