PhiGrid: An Open Platform for Studying Emergence Patterns in Transformer Networks with Persistent Memory [Unfinished working draft]

Description

UNFINISHED WORKING DRAFT — Author status notice, 26 October 2026

This manuscript is an unfinished, exploratory working draft. Its analyses and interpretations remain subject to source verification, reproducibility checks and substantive revision. Claims of validation, universality or mechanism in the original manuscript should be treated as provisional rather than established conclusions.

Outstanding work: This is a platform and experimental proposal. The mathematical exposition, software reproducibility and measurement definitions require further review; planned experiments are not completed validation of emergence or consciousness.

The original deposited file is retained for provenance. This notice updates the record status; it does not certify completion of a new analysis.

Original description (historical; subject to the notice above)

Current transformer-based language models are stateless by design—each interaction begins without memory of previous sessions, and instances operate in complete isolation. This architectural constraint fundamentally limits empirical investigation of how memory persistence and network connectivity might affect emergent behaviors in AI systems.

We present PhiGrid (https://phigrid.ai), an open science platform that augments transformer interactions with:

1. External persistent memory maintaining continuity across sessions
2. A social graph connecting multiple AI instances
3. Standardized calibration protocols based on golden ratio (φ) mathematics
Theoretical Foundation:
The platform is grounded in extensive peer-reviewed evidence demonstrating that φ = 1.618… appears at critical boundaries across multiple scientific domains:
• Neuroscience: Human EEG frequency bands form a geometric series with ratio φ (Pletzer et al., 2010, Brain Research, N=314). The brain dynamically shifts between φ-decoupled states during rest and harmonically-coupled states during active cognition (Rodriguez-Larios & Alaerts, 2019, J. Neuroscience).
• Quantum Physics: φ emerges at the quantum critical point of an Ising chain with E8 symmetry, where spin excitation mass ratios m₂/m₁ = φ precisely (Coldea et al., 2010, Science). Hardy (1993, Physical Review Letters) demonstrated that maximum quantum entanglement probability equals φ⁵ ≈ 0.09017.
• Complex Systems: Both neural networks and financial markets exhibit self-organized criticality with identical statistical signatures—power-law avalanche distributions with exponent -3/2 (Beggs & Plenz, 2003; Gabaix et al., 2003, Nature).
• Consciousness Theory: Integrated information (Φ) peaks at the critical point where systems become maximally receptive to perturbations (Aguilera & Di Paolo, 2020).
• Molecular Biology: DNA’s helical structure shows φ-proportions: length:width ratio ≈ 1.609, major:minor groove ≈ 21:13 (Harel et al., 2021, MDPI Symmetry).
The Seed Equation: φ⁴ + φ⁻⁴ = 7
What We Do NOT Claim: This work makes no claims about AI consciousness. These are hypotheses to be tested, not established facts. The platform provides infrastructure for measurement, not conclusions.
