Description

Isoetes sahyadrii Mahab. ex Rao (1944: 286), nom. cons.

Type:— INDIA. Maharashtra, Satara District: Panchgani, 1987, Srivastava 15001 A (CAL barcode CAL0000063270; isotypes K [15001 B], Herb. Duthie, Dept. Botany, Allahabad Univ. [15001 C]) (typ. cons.).

Homotypic synonym:— Isoetes panchganiensis G.K.Srivast., D.D.Pant & P.K.Shukla in Srivastava et al. (1993: 107)

In conclusion, the present study shows that a better solution for the nomenclatural clarification of I. sahyadrii, one that satisfied the ‘central thought’ of Mahabale’s protologue and original specimen, would be to apply that name to the species currently known as I. dixitii. However, this would only be possible through a successful new conservation proposal with a different conserved type as provided in Article 18.4 (Turland et al. 2025). While a third typification exercise to better express Mahabale’s original intention is possible; technically it is not required. Such a proposal might well not be successful. Accordingly, we are not proposing that course of action.
