Description
1. Cirsium tibeticum Kitamura (1953: 43).
Type: — CHINA. Xizang, Lhasa, Jibu, E. Kawaguchi 96864 (holotype: TNS96864!).
Description: —Herbs 30–150 cm tall, perennial. Stems erect, unbranched or branched above, ribbed, pubescent with densely long multicellular hairs, and mixed with sparse cobwebby hairs on the upper parts. Basal leaves with petioles, ca. 10 cm long, fringed with triangular spiny wings and with an apical spine ca. 3–5 mm long; leaf blade ovate or lanceolate, 10–20 × 5–10 cm, pinnatipartite or pinnatisect; segments 7–10 pairs, semi-elliptic or ovate, margins with 3–5 spiny teeth, each tooth tipped with a spine 4–7 mm long, margins with setaceous spiny hairs. Cauline leaves gradually smaller upwards, similar in shape to basal leaves, sessile, auriculate amplexicaul, leaves near the involucre often becoming spiny. All leaves concolorous, green, with crispate multicellular hairs dense abaxially along veins but scattered elsewhere. Capitula slope downward or nodding, arranged in racemose, spicate, or corymbose inflorescences. Involucre ovoid or ovoid-globose, glabrous or sparsely cobwebby, 1–2 cm in diameter. Phyllaries in about 7 rows, imbricate, increasing in length from outside to inside; outer and middle phyllaries lanceolate, 7–10 mm long, narrowed into a 2–3 mm long apical spinule; inner phyllaries linear-lanceolate or linear, ca. 1.3 mm long, apex acuminate or slightly expanded and membranous. Florets bisexual. Corolla purplish red, ca. 1.5 cm long, tube about 0.7 cm long. Achenes brown, ca. 4 mm long. Pappus pale brown, bristles, ca. 1.4 cm long.
Phenology: —Flowering from June to October.
Distribution and habitat: — Cirsium tibeticum is distributed in China (Yunnan, Sichuan, and Xizang), Bhutan and Nepal. It grows in roadside wastelands, forest edges, and riverbanks at elevations of 2040–4420 m.
