Environmental factors influence heritage speakers' language use

  • 1. Universität Zürich

Description

I carried out a pilot study with 28 heritage speakers of Albanian and Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian in Switzerland. Analysis has provided evidence that environmental factors - such as residential segregation, urbanization, local and transnational networks and others - influence heritage speakers' language use, with impact on language maintenance and shift.

This study was presented at the Linguistic Society of America Annual Meeting 2026 at New Orleans Marriott.
