Description

Eurodistus Madhushan, P.C. Ding & Maharachch. gen. nov.

MycoBank: MB 859651

Etymology: “ Eurodistus ” refers to a distoseptate (- distus) fungus classified within the class Eurotiomycetes (Euro -).

Saprobic on dead branch of an unidentified terrestrial dicotyledonous plant. Asexual morph: hyphomycetous. Colonies on the substratum superficial, effuse, scattered, hairy, dark brown, grey or black. Mycelium partly immersed, composed of branched, septate, smooth, pale brown hyphae. Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, septate, unbranched, single or caespitose, erect, straight or bent, smooth, dark brown, tapering distally, and robust at the base. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, integrated, determinate, terminal, dark brown, cylindrical. Conidia acrogenous, solitary, dry, obclavate, elongated, straight or slightly curved, truncate at the base, distoseptate, smooth, dark brown to black, paler towards the apex, and thick-walled. Sexual morph: undetermined.

Type species: Eurodistus sichuanense Madhushan, P.C. Ding & Maharachch.

Notes: Our collections exhibit distinct morphological characteristics, having acrogenous, obclavate, elongated, and distoseptate conidia, which are not found in any known members of the family Herpotrichiellaceae. Generally, herpotrichiellaceous hyphomycetes comprises black yeasts producing holoblastic, aseptate or septate conidia from small pegs on conidiophores, often in chains with annellidic features and occasional fusion or bending (Müller et al. 1987; Untereiner et al. 1995; Tian et al. 2021), or other forms with short or inconspicuous conidiophores bearing oval, muriform conidia (Tian et al. 2016; Dong et al. 2018).However, the morphological characters of our collections resemble species of Distoseptispora, Sporidesmium (Su et al. 2016), and Linkosia (Wu & Diao 2022) in Sordariomycetes, and Corynespora (Ma et al. 2008) and Sporidesmiella (Ma et al. 2012) in Dothideomycetes, all of which share acrogenous, obclavate, elongated, distoseptate conidia.
