Description

Anisotaenia avromanica Ghaderi, Maroofi & Rastegar, sp. nov. (Figs. 3, 4, 5b)

Type: ― IRAN. Kurdistan Province: South of Marivan, Bendol Mountain, 2200 m a. s. l., 13 September 2016, H. Ghaderi (holotype HKS 13396!).

Description: ―Herbs, perennial. Root thick, neck covered with fibrous remnants of leaves, whole plant glabrous. Stem terete, 60–120 cm long, 7–11 mm in diameter, striate to ± sulcate, unbranched. Basal leaves 40–60 × 10–18 cm, 4 or 5 pinnate, terminal segments 40–80 × 0.5 mm, filiform, entire, canaliculate. Stem leaves similar to basal but smaller, falling soon. Inflorescence thyrsoid-paniculate with numerous lateral branches, rather dense, 15–40 cm long; bracts (bractiform) supporting panicles long acuminate (those subtending branches of inflorescence amplexicaule). Rays at fruiting time 7–15, 7–12 mm long; bracts 6–7, ovate, acuminate to long apex, 10–35 × 5–10 mm; bracteoles 5–7, similar to bracts, but smaller, margin mainly ciliate. Fruiting pedicels 2–3.5 mm long, thick. Flowers more than 10. Petals yellow, glabrous. Style to 2.5 mm long, patent. Ovary glabrous. Mericarp ellipsoid-oblong, 5–7 × 3–4 mm, with 3 prominent dorsal ribs. Calyx teeth triangular, ± acuminate. Dorsal vittae 10–12. Commissural vittae 4.

Taxonomic notes:Anisotaenia avromanica is close to A. abbreviata (C.C. Towns.) Lyskov (2025: 16) and A. blancheana (Post ex Boiss.) Lyskov & Akalin (2025: 16) but differs from them respectively by the following characteristics: Stem surface (terete vs. striate, strongly angled); terminal segments length (40–80 mm vs. 2–5 mm, (5–)10–35(–70) mm), and shape of bracts (ovate, acuminate to long apex vs. triangular-ovate, triangular-lanceolate) (for more details, see Table 2).

Phenology: ―Flowering from August to September, fruiting from September to October.

Etymology: ―Avroman, the region where Anisotaenia avromanica was found, is the source for the species epithet.

Distribution and ecology:Anisotaenia avromanica is restricted to rocky, sub-alpine habitats in the Bendol mountains (Fig. 6). Anisotaenia avromanica is known from three populations. Reproduction appears to be satisfactory.
