Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies in maintenance
Description
This work investigates the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies into industrial maintenance processes, addressing the growing need for efficient, safe, and cost‑effective maintenance operations in increasingly complex industrial environments. The thesis develops an information framework that supports the use of AR/VR for diagnosis, repair, training, and performance analysis, detailing data requirements, interaction models, and system components. Through a comprehensive literature analysis, interviews with maintenance experts, and a review of current hardware/software solutions, the work highlights benefits, limitations, and future research directions for AR/VR‑enhanced maintenance. The study concludes that AR and VR can significantly improve human–machine interaction, information accessibility, and decision‑making in maintenance, but further advancements are required in multimodal interaction, analytics integration, and contextualized data management.
