Strategic Benchmarking of Indigenous Breeds: The Synergy Between NBAGR Certification and Gi Tagging in Enhancing Agribusiness Competitiveness

Authors/Creators

Description

India’s agricultural and livestock sectors are deeply rooted in biodiversity, particularly in the form of indigenous livestock breeds adapted to local ecologies and socio-cultural practices. However, the marginalization of these breeds due to crossbreeding and industrial farming has prompted a need for strategic interventions for their conservation and valorization. This paper
examines the strategic role of the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) certification and Geographical Indication (GI) tagging in benchmarking and enhancing the competitiveness of indigenous livestock breeds in the Indian agribusiness landscape. It explores how these two mechanisms—genetic validation via NBAGR and economic branding through
GI—create a synergistic framework that supports breed-specific development, market differentiation, and sustainable rural livelihoods. Empirical insights from case studies of selected NBAGR-certified and GI-tagged breeds are analyzed to demonstrate the effectiveness of integrated intellectual property and genetic resource governance. The paper concludes with policy recommendations to strengthen institutional coordination and expand the adoption of certification-tagging models across agri-food value chains.
