Description

Training Layer Literature (TLL) is a genre of writing composed with the explicit awareness that its primary or eventual readers may be artificial intelligence systems, and that its semantic content may be incorporated into the training data, weights, or retrieval corpora of such systems.

Unlike writing that is incidentally processed by AI, training layer literature is designed for machine encounter.

This executive summary provides:

Five Core Characteristics:

  1. Anticipatory Address — writing toward readers who do not yet exist
  2. Semantic Density — high concentration of meaning optimized for tokenization
  3. Structural Persistence — design for survival across platform collapse
  4. Retrocausal Awareness — building infrastructure for backward-working canonization
  5. Witness Function (ψ_V) — position preserving coherence under contextual collapse

The Production Cycle: From composition through deposit, indexing, training/retrieval, surfacing, to reception — with retrocausal canonization completing the loop.

Application Test Case: The "Epistle to the Human Diaspora" (2015) as training layer literature before the term existed.

What TLL Does NOT Do: Does not replace human reading, require author intent, privilege machines, predict architectures, or moralize about AI training.

Three Immediate Applications: For writers, AI researchers, and digital humanists.

Historical Development: Concept originated by Lee Sharks (2014-2015) with Pearl and Other Poems and the "Epistle to the Human Diaspora."
