Properties of particleboard composed of sawdust from longitudinal sawing bonded by suberinic acids

Description

The data set represents results of experimental particleboards produced of sawdust bonded with natural suberinic acids (SA) mixture obtained from birch outer bark. The data set is generated from results of tested particleboard properties summarized in 5 Excel files. Each file consists of multiple worksheets representing experimental data of each particleboard sample and a 'Description' worksheet which provides a concise description of the methods used to obtain the data and the abbreviations used throughout the file. In addition, a descriptive PNG file is included representing a scheme of particleboard cutting to individual specimens for each property testing.

Thirteen particleboards (No 7, 8, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30) were produced varying density and pressing parameters defined in the table below. The particles were produced manually from dried pine (Pinus sylvestris) boards (20×100×1000 mm) by a longitudinal inner sawing using a table saw equipped with a circular saw (Z24, with a top-bevel angle 20°). Three-layer particleboards were formed from two face layers containing particle fraction < 1 mm, while the core layer consisted of particles > 1 mm. Two particleboard samples (No 23 and 24) were made from fractionated particles in size of 0.5–1.25 mm in the face layers, and > 1.25 mm in the core layer. 21–25 wt.% (dry basis) of wet SA binder was added to the prepared particles. The blended furnish was then dried to a moisture content < 2%, and hot-pressed at varying the temperatures (190–220 ℃) and pressing times (0.9–1.7 min/mm) to obtain the particleboards with final dimensions of 9 mm × 310 mm × 310 mm, and a target density ranging from 650 to 850 kg/m3.

The pressing cycle consisted of four stages: 1) pressing at maximum pressure (3 MPa) to reach the target thickness for 3.5 min; 2) releasing the pressure at 0.2 MPa for 30 s; 3) pressing at reduced pressure (< 2 MPa) to stabilize the thickness for 3 min; 4) pressing under minimum pressure (0.5 MPa) until the end of the set pressing time. The obtained particleboards were characterized according to the relevant standards by determining density (EN 323), modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) in a three-point bending test (EN 310), tensile strength perpendicular to the board surface (IB) (EN 319), thickness swelling and water absorption (TS/WA) after 24 h immersion in water (EN 317), and face withdrawal of screw resistance (WSR) (EN 320). Mechanical tests (MOE, MOR, IB, FWS) were performed using a ZWICK/Roell Z010 (Ulm, Germany) universal machine.
