Description
This work represents an early, structured effort to deliver foundational education in clinical visual electrophysiology to the ophthalmology community in Sri Lanka, at a time when formal exposure to electroretinography (ERG) and related electrophysiological tests was limited.
The presentation was developed in parallel with the establishment of the first ISCEV-standardized ERG laboratory in Sri Lanka at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, following the recognition that functional retinal assessment was under-utilized and poorly understood among many eye care professionals in the country. While modern retinal imaging was widely adopted, knowledge of when electrophysiology is indicated, what it measures, and how results should be interpreted remained insufficient. This initiative aimed to help bridge that gap, even if initially on a modest scale, through targeted education.
The material was originally prepared by Suneth Dayan Lindamulage, based on hands-on experience gained through multiple international electrophysiology courses, workshops, and observerships. It was presented by Dr. Dushyantha Wariyapola at the 2019 Annual Scientific Congress of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka on 28th of September 2019, a national academic meeting attended by consultant ophthalmologists, senior registrars, registrars, other trainees, and allied eye care professionals. The session was intended to introduce core concepts of ERG, mfERG, PERG, EOG, and VEP, emphasizing structure–function correlation, clinical indications, and practical interpretation within routine ophthalmic practice.
This original presentation is shared on Zenodo for academic reference, educational reuse, and historical documentation of early capacity-building efforts in clinical vision electrophysiology in Sri Lanka.
