Older People, grandparents... How Men age in the Cinema?

En las últimas décadas la esperanza de vida ha aumentado muchísimo en España y cada vez hay más centenarios en nuestra sociedad. En este contexto, están surgiendo nuevos paradigmas de la vejez que deben ser explorados. Este capítulo analiza la “iconización” del envejecimiento masculino en el cine español. A través del análisis de los filmes más emblemáticos protagonizados por abuelos o señores mayores, este artículo cuestiona qué es ser un hombre mayor en el cine y si acaso envejecer es un proceso positivo o negativo.

In recent decades, life expectancy has increased dramatically in Spain, and there are more and more centenarians in our society. In this context, new paradigms of old age are emerging that must be explored. This chapter analyzes the "iconization" of male aging in Spanish cinema. Through an analysis of the most emblematic films starring grandfathers or older men, this article questions what it means to be an older man in film and whether aging is a positive or negative process.
