Design and Development of a Retail Shop Billing System

Description

AbstractRetail shops handle numerous customer transactions daily, requiring accuracy and efficiency for smooth operations. Many small retail establishments continue to rely on manual billing methods that are

time-consuming and error-prone. The implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) has further com- plicated billing processes due to multiple tax slabs (0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%) and stringent record- keeping requirements. This paper presents the design and development of an automated Retail Shop Billing System that streamlines billing operations, GST cal- culation, inventory management, and sales reporting. The system utilizes Java for application logic and MySQL for database management, supporting GST slab-wise tax calculation and generating itemized bills with transparent tax breakdowns. Additionally, the sys- tem maintains comprehensive sales records and tracks inventory levels to facilitate efficient daily operations for shop owners. The proposed solution is expected to significantly reduce manual effort, improve billing accu- racy, and provide a practical, reliable system suitable for small retail environments with minimal hardware requirements.
