Guidelines for Openness and Diversity in Citizen Science (D5.1)

  • 1. Stickydot

Description

This deliverable presents evidence-based guidelines for promoting openness and diversity in citizen science, drawing on insights from seven inclusive pilot projects and ten public library events implemented across Europe between 2023 and 2025 within the ECS project. The pilots engaged underrepresented groups including older adults, migrants, fishing communities, hunters, youth from underserved backgrounds, people with disabilities, and young children. Through thematic analysis of pilot documentation, consultation notes, capacity building workshops, and impact stories, this work identifies key drivers of success and persistent barriers to inclusive participation. Critical findings reveal that co-creation from project inception, provision of multiple participation pathways beyond digital technologies, building trust through sustained commitment, and valuing social connection alongside scientific contribution are essential for meaningful engagement. The guidelines are structured around four interconnected pillars: establishing a foundational mindset of intersectionality and community benefit, implementing genuine co-design and participatory approaches, ensuring accessible implementation and engagement, and committing to sustaining impact and relationships. This deliverable aims to support citizen science practitioners, libraries, policy makers, and funders in creating more inclusive and impactful initiatives that democratise who participates in and benefits from scientific knowledge creation.
