Policy brief. Transboundary Biodiversity Protection under International and EU Law: Avenues for Reform towards Ecological Unity

This policy brief is part of the TRANSNATURE project, TRANSboundary governance models of biodiversity protection: case studies for an enhanced protection of NATURal resources in Europe, funded in the context of the 2021-2022 BiodivProtect call of Biodiversa+. Drawing from a comparison of the main necessities and challenges in the project's case studies, this policy brief aims to go beyond the project’s specific study areas to explore the place of TBP in light of the current EU and international legal and policy framework. In particular, the following questions are addressed: 1) How can transboundary biodiversity governance be enhanced at EU and international levels?; 2) How can transboundary biodiversity protection contribute to the implementation of biodiversity law at EU (Habitats and Birds Directive and Nature Restoration Law) and international level (CBD and Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework)?
