The Time Mandala: A Minimal Model of Temporal Sequence

Description

Across scientific and applied disciplines, change is typically explained through domain-specific mechanisms: cognitive processes in psychology, feedback loops in control theory, learning phases in education, adaptive cycles in ecology, and transformation models in organizations. While these approaches differ in content and scale, they converge on a shared structural limitation: temporal sequence is usually assumed rather than explicitly specified. As a result, failures of persistence, regulation, or sustainability are often attributed to deficits in motivation, skill, or meaning, rather than to breakdowns in sequencing itself.

This paper introduces the Time Mandala, a minimal, domain-agnostic model describing the structural temporal sequence through which potential becomes action, action encounters constraint, produces effects, dissipates, and re-enters subsequent cycles under altered conditions. The model identifies eight recurring temporal functions: Point, Line, Circle, Square, Touch Point, Blooming, Collapse, and Rebirth.

The Time Mandala is descriptive rather than predictive and advances no causal, normative, or evaluative claims. It does not explain why a process occurs, what it means, or whether it is adaptive. Instead, it specifies the minimal temporal architecture required for any process to continue without fragmentation across psychological, biological, organizational, and ecological scales. By explicitly separating sequence from mechanism and meaning, the framework reduces category error and supports clearer cross-domain analysis of persistence, failure, and reorganization.
