A Methodological Examination of Toponymic Comparison between the Goryeo History and the Geographical Treatise of the Veritable Records of King Sejong

This paper examines the methodological conditions for comparing geographical descriptions in Goryeosa and the Geographical Treatise (Jiriji) of the Veritable Records of King Sejong.

Instead of assuming that the two texts describe the same spatial framework, the study analyzes how space is constructed and referenced in each source. It focuses on differences in the concept of distance, the use of directional expressions, and the modes of toponymic reference. The analysis shows that Goryeosa and the Sejong Sillok Jiriji operate according to different principles of spatial organization.

These differences cannot be explained simply as stylistic variation. Direct comparison requires methodological justification, as the two sources do not presuppose a shared spatial coordinate system. This paper provides a methodological foundation for subsequent comparative research on premodern Korean historical geography.

본 논문은 『고려사』와 『세종실록지리지』의 지리 서술을 비교하기 위해 필요한 방법론적 전제 조건을 검토한다.

두 문헌이 동일한 공간을 전제로 한다는 가정을 두지 않고, 각 텍스트가 공간을 구성하고 참조하는 방식을 분석한다. 거리 개념, 방향 표현, 지명 참조 방식을 중심으로 검토한 결과, 두 사서는 서로 다른 공간 구성 논리를 전제로 하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다.

이러한 차이는 단순한 표현 방식의 차이로 환원되기 어렵다. 따라서 두 문헌을 동일한 공간 좌표 체계 하에서 직접 비교하기 위해서는 방법론적 검증이 선행되어야 한다. 본 연구는 고려·조선 시기 지리 자료 비교 연구를 위한 기초적 방법론을 제시한다.
