This is the foundational publication of the new scientific, technological and gradually medical discipline of in silico medicine and was led by the father of in silico medicine, Georgios S. Stamatakos.

Proceedings of the IEEE is a top-tier,  peer-reviewed technology journal with impact factor = 25.9 in 2026.

The concrete paradigm of in silico radiation oncology  - a medical specialty that generates a large amount of data and exploits advanced, large scale and multifaceted technologies - is used in order to communicate the core concept and the key approaches of generic in silico medicine. This approach has been deemed preferable to resorting to generic views and visions of questionable persuasiveness.

It is worth noting that this paper was published one year before the formation of the USA Interagency Modeling and Analysis Group (IMAG) focusing on multiscale modelling in biomedical, biological and behavioral systems (2003) ( https://www.nibib.nih.gov/programs/interagency-modeling-analysis-group-imag ) and three years before the launching of the predominantly European Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) initiative by 13 researchers and the European Commission, through a white paper (2005) (https://www.vph-institute.org/upload/file517569145f61b.pdf ).

Therefore, the specific publication provides hard evidence for the history of the emergence of in silico medicine.
