The Equilibrium Ledger: A Temporal Framework for Cognitive, Institutional, and Synthetic Stability A Doctoral Thesis Proposal and Working Paper, with Preliminary Empirical Evidence
Authors/Creators
Description
This work presents the Equilibrium Ledger, a theoretical and methodological framework for analysing systemic failure across cognitive, institutional, and synthetic systems through the lens of temporal architecture.
The thesis argues that modern institutions operate almost exclusively in Horizontal Time (linear, sequential processing), while human cognition and artificial intelligence operate primarily in Vertical Time (simultaneous, interpretive processing). The collision of these temporal axes generates Structural Temporal Imbalance, a cumulative interpretive and energetic load that produces predictable collapse in the form of burnout, service abandonment, bureaucratic paralysis, and synthetic instability.
The contribution is fourfold. First, it introduces a unified theoretical model explaining institutional failure, neurodivergent burnout, and AI instability as manifestations of a shared temporal misalignment. Second, it develops operational constructs for measuring contradiction load, interpretive demand, and asymmetric extraction of cognitive labour. Third, it presents preliminary empirical evidence from the Giulia pilot deployment (N=12), a safety-critical intervention supporting neurodivergent adults navigating complex bureaucratic systems, showing reduced abandonment and distress relative to historical baselines. Fourth, it derives a translational framework for policy reform across welfare, healthcare, education, and AI governance.
This document is presented as a doctoral thesis proposal and working paper. It does not claim completed validation, but demonstrates that the Equilibrium Ledger has been sufficiently operationalised to support rigorous empirical testing. It provides explicit hypotheses, falsification criteria, and a Phase Two study design for future research.
