Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC): Concept, Components, and Strategic Importance in Reducing Maternal Mortality
Authors/Creators
Description
Maternal mortality remains a global health crisis, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. While
antenatal screening is essential, it cannot predict most obstetric emergencies. This article
examines Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) as a critical health system intervention. By
analyzing the "Three Delays" model and the nine "Signal Functions" of care, the author argues
that institutionalizing functional EmOC is the most effective strategy for reducing maternal and
neonatal morbidity and mortality.
