Description

Sporophila ruficollis Cabanis

Sporophila ruficollis Cabanis,Mus.Hein., 1,p.150,1851(" Montevideo").

Specimens examined.— ARGENTINA: ♂,¹ Ocampo; ♀,¹ Selva, Santiago del Éstero; ♂,¹ Tucumán.

Measurements.— ♂ ♂ wing 54-55.5mm., tail 38-40.5 mm., culmen 8.5-9 mm.; ♀ wing 51.5, tail 39, culmen 7.5 mm.

Description of female.— Worn plumage: above dull palebrown, cheeks and under surface bright chamois (in fresh plumage probably bright ochraceous), wing coverts edged with clay color.

Range.—Southern Brazil in Mato Grosso, southern Goiaz and São Paulo; northern Argentina in Tucumán, Santiago del Éstero, Chaco, Santa Fé Entre-Ríos, Buenos Aires; Uruguay (" Montevideo "), Paraguay at Sapucay and Puerto Bertoni, and Bolivia in Santa Cruz and Beni (Chiquitos, San Fermín; El Consuelo).

Remarks.—The male from Ocampo has the throat and upper breast blackish brown; in the male from Tucuman it is even blacker. According to Hellmayr the color of the throat and breast varies (with age?) "from auburn to chestnut brown and sooty black." Hellmayr questions the type locality. The species appears to be known in Uruguay only from " Montevideo."

For a species considered to be rare, this seed-eater seems to have a wide distribution.
