Sporophila caerulescens caerulescens (Vieillot)

Pyrrhula caerulescens Vieillot, Tabl. Enc. Méth., Orn., livr. 93, p. 1023, 1817 (Vicinity of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

Specimens examined.— ARGENTINA: ♂, ♀, La Plata. PARAGUAY: ♂, 40 km. west-southwest of Camambay - C Bado. BRAZIL: ♀, Curitiba, Paraná. BOLIVIA: ♂, Mójos.

Measurements.— ♂ ♂ wing 58-60.5 mm.,tail 45-50 mm., culmen 8.5-9 mm.; ♀♀ wing58.5, 59.5mm., tail 43,46 mm., culmen 7.5,8 mm.

Description of female.— Fresh plumage: very similar to luctuosa, but back browner, only very slightly olivaceous, and upper tail coverts slightly tinged rufescent,not the same color as the back,as in luctuosa. Worn plumage: aboveduller,lesswarm brownish, below duller, belly whiter, less buffy.

Range.—Northern Argentina, Brazil from the south bank of the lower Amazon southward to Goiaz, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, and the Bolivian Chaco.

Remarks.—A single male from the rio Tapajoz examined by Hellmayr and another from the rio Irirí seen by Griscom and Greenway are paler gray than the typical form. A series may show a lower Amazonian race to be separable.
