Description

Sporophila americana americana (Gmelin)

Loxia americana Gmelin, Syst. Nat., 1 (2), p. 863, 1789 (Cayenne).

Specimens examined.— VENEZUELA: ♂, Pedernales. BRITISH GUIANA: 2 ♂, Bartica Grove; ♂, locality unspecified. FRENCH GUIANA! 5 ♂, 7 ♀, locality unspecified.

Measurements.— ♂ ♂ wing 57- 60.5 mm., tail 44-48 mm., culmen 9- 105 mm.; ♀ ♀ wing 54.5 -58 mm., tail 41 -48 mm., culmen 95- 105 mm.

Description of ƒemale.— Fresh plumage: not unlike intermedia intermedia, but duller below, under parts more uniform, back darker.

Range.—Tobago, Trinidad, the region about the mouths of the Orinoco in northeastern Venezuela, southward through the Guianas to Marajó, Mexiana, and the Pará region of Brazil.
