Chiquinho and Buster Brown: Comic Strips and Globalization in the Early 20th Century

The Brazilian comic Chiquinho, which appearred in the children's weekly magazine O Tico-Tico borrowed heavily from the American comic strip Buster Brown. This article examines the manner in which these boowings occured, with detailed readings of several strips in their original and Brazilian forms. The article is based on research that examined available Buster Brown strips from 1902 to 1920 and Chiquinho episodes from 1905 to 1920 establishing the source for the Brazilian comic.
