Description

The increasing volume of municipal solid waste represents a critical challenge to sustainable urban development. Traditional disposal methods are not sufficient to address the environmental, economic and social cost of growing waste. The concept of solid waste management needed to evolve beyond simple disposal of waste. It is now globally recognized that waste when properly managed can serve as a valuable resource. This has led to a paradigm shift towards resource recovery which focuses on extracting value from waste and aligns to the principles of circular economy. The study examines the current waste management system in the city and highlights the efficacy of solid liquid resource management in transforming waste from a burden into a valuable resource. The economic, social and environmental benefits of the waste management system during 2023-24 have been analyzed. The findings reveal the effectiveness and the outcomes of empowering local communities in waste management.
