Spain as a Haven for Italian Mafia Fugitives

More than a hundred Italian mafia members wanted by the Italian justice system have been arrested in Spain since the 1980s and the first quarter of the 21st century. Some lived in hiding; others flaunted their wealth while continuing to run their clans and create routes for international drug trafficking. Attracted by the pleasant Mediterranean climate, most have settled on the Costa del Sol and in the province of Barcelona. Although the Camorra has three and four times as many arrests as the 'Ndrangheta and Cosa Nostra, respectively, it is common to all these mafias that some of their most prominent criminal figures chose the land south of the Pyrenees and its islands to prolong their escape.

Más de cien mafiosos italianos reclamados por la justicia de su país han sido detenidos en España desde la década de los años ochenta del siglo pasado y el primer cuarto del siglo XXI. Algunos vivían en clandestinidad; otros alardeaban de su riqueza mientras seguían dirigiendo sus clanes y creando rutas para el narcotráfico internacional. Atraídos por el buen clima mediterráneo, la mayoría se han asentado en la Costa del Sol y la provincia de Barcelona. Si bien la Camorra triplica y cuadruplica en detenciones a la ‘Ndrangheta y Cosa Nostra, respectivamente, es común a todas estas mafias que algunas de sus figuras criminales más destacadas escogieran la tierra al sur de los Pirineos y sus islas para prolongar sus fugas.
