Work is understood as a dynamic field in which different strategies are used to meet its demands. One of these strategies is the organization of work in teams—a means employed by organizations with the purpose of achieving established goals. The performance of multiprofessional teams in the health sector constitutes a resource for meeting the needs of the Unified Health System (SUS), since, in this context, teams need to work interdependently in order to achieve goals, effectiveness, and health indicators. In these terms, the present study was guided by the following question: what are the defining characteristics of work teams that operate in Basic Health Units (UBS)? Based on this question, the study sought to investigate the defining characteristics of work teams in their performance in UBSs in a coastal city in the state of Piauí. In this regard, it was grounded in the theoretical framework on work teams found in the literature of Organizational and Work Psychology. The research adopted a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive design and included the participation of 19 professionals. The instruments used were a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview guide. The linguistic content produced by the participants was analyzed through Content Analysis using the technique proposed by Bardin. The results indicated: (1) the existence of goals that guide team actions; (2) that work is carried out in an interdependent manner; and (3) a sense of belonging among members within team dynamics. Based on these results, it was concluded that, due to their actions, the teams provide comprehensive care to the population using health services across different community settings.
