Description
Abstract
The commentary on the work Landscape (1981) by Virgilio Albiac highlights the maturity achieved by the artist in his role as an Aragonese landscape painter, a genre that constituted the central axis of his career. Executed in mixed media, the work is characterized by a forceful and structural use of color and by a material treatment of the surface that enhances its plastic intensity. The landscape is not constructed through mimesis, but rather through broad chromatic fields organized with a palette knife, in which echoes of Cubism assimilated by Albiac around 1966 can be discerned, along with clear influences of Informalism, especially visible in the lower area of the canvas.
The tension between dynamism and calm, between fragmentation and compositional balance, is interpreted as a metaphor for the artist’s constant inquiry and for the duality that runs through his work: geometric abstraction and color as autonomous values versus the persistent reference to natural reality. The landscape appears deliberately devoid of limits, conceived as an idea of infinity that invites the viewer to active participation, unifying the temporal and spatial planes suggested by the painter. Rather than narrating or describing, the work proposes an open perceptual experience, in which the barely intuited topography breaks down into multiple planes in order to lead the viewer beyond the visible, toward the latent truth behind the painting’s formal values.
This commentary, signed by Vicente Méndez Hernán, is published in the book Museo de pintura. Virgilio Albiac (Nautilus Ediciones, 2023), coordinated by Ana María Bielsa Masdeu, a fundamental work for understanding the artist’s aesthetic evolution and his contribution to contemporary Spanish landscape painting.
