Description

Generational trauma is no longer a metaphor. There is now substantial evidence that the emotional and physiological imprint of unresolved stress can be transmitted across families and even across biological generations (Bowers & Yehuda, 2016; Franco, 2023; Reese et al., 2022). At the same time, practice communities are converging on a clear message: healing requires stable relationships, coherent narratives, and safe containers that allow the nervous system to reorganize over time (Courtois & Ford, 2020; van der Kolk, 2014).

This paper presents a unified model for this healing work, emerging from a distinct, multi strand collaboration. We integrate four key contributions: (1) a clinical methodology drawn from Sue Broughton's generational trauma work and guide (Broughton, n.d.); (2) the Fourteen Universal Principles of Relational Coherence (Broughton, 2025b), a theoretical framework distilled from phenomenological observation; (3) Fractal Theory (FT; Morgan, 2025a, 2025b), a structural mathematical language describing reality through operators such as Unity, Division, Scale, Drift, and Memory; and (4) the prior joint synthesis that formally mapped the Principles onto FT dynamics (Broughton & Morgan, 2025).

Trauma ceases to be an inexplicable fate and appears instead as a specific, structural pattern: a recursive system locked in high Division, distorted Drift, and fragmented Memory. Correspondingly, healing is framed as a recursive, three phase process of stabilizing local shells (individual safety), re-threading relational shells (family and community), and expanding coherent Memory outward (intergenerational restoration).

Our aim is not to replace trauma theory, but to offer clinicians and researchers a shared structural operational vocabulary for what many are already doing intuitively. This vocabulary, grounded in the combined rigor of relational principles and fractal mathematics, provides a new lens for recognizing, discussing, and facilitating the repair of patterns that echo across generations.
