Description

This study investigated how early childhood education (ECE) teachers in Ghana's Lower Manya Krobo District utilise their classroom environment to enhance learners’ effective engagement and how they modify their teaching strategies in response to changing conditions. Guided by Reggio Emilia approach, this study employs the exploratory sequential mixed-method design involving 122 ECE teachers. Data were collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics with multiple regression analysis testing the hypothesis, while qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis. The findings revealed that although educators, especially those with more experience and higher education, intentionally planned classroom environments and modified them, age was the only factor that significantly predicted classroom utilization when it came to teaching strategies to maintain effective engagement. Teaching experience and educational attainment had no discernible effects. Notably, while new teachers frequently used replication and reactive tactics, seasoned educators showed proactive adaptations like differentiated instruction, noise control, and innovative use of local resources. The study comes to the conclusion that teacher maturity, contextual flexibility, and intentional practices are more important for effective classroom utilization than mere formal credentials and tenure. It suggests ongoing professional development with an emphasis on classroom management, peer mentoring between more and less experienced educators, expanding the availability of affordable and culturally appropriate resources, and integrating ICT tools to maintain learner interest and engagement.
