Cutting-Edge Outreach Efforts in Aurora Science
Authors/Creators
Description
Engaging audiences in our science and in STEM concepts in general is important for many reasons, including fixing the “pipeline problem” and demonstrating broader impacts. The field of Space Physics is perhaps unique, with the natural beauty of the aurora serving as a gateway for the public to dig deeper into the physics of the Sun-Earth system. The aurora is also a touchpoint for millions of night-sky enthusiasts who are part of international aurora-chasing groups and also involved directly in research efforts. This presentation will highlight recent aurora outreach efforts to engage a variety of public audiences in unique ways that not only share space-weather science but also invite enthusiasts to collaborate. Some recent highlights include (1) the SolarMaX observation campaign in collaboration with SpaceX’s Fram2 mission, (2) coordinated participatory-science campaigns to gather observations of rare auroral phenomena, and (3) social-media efforts to communicate space-weather events generating >1 million impressions. Opportunities leveraging emerging technologies and trends will also be covered. This presentation will keep project details high-level, focusing instead on adaptable strategies and techniques that other fields can adopt. Through the combined effects of solar maximum, intense space-weather events, and NASA’s Heliophysics Big Year, public interest in space weather is higher than ever before. It’s important to act now so everyone understands the importance of space weather and is invited into participatory-science efforts. Informing the public of our science is necessary for the longevity of our work.
