PHYTOCHEMICAL PROFILE OF THE CORNFLOWER (CENTAUREA CYANUS L.)
Authors/Creators
Description
The cornflower (Centaurea cyanus L.) is considered a promising source of a wide spectrum of biologically active compounds, whose phytochemical profile varies substantially depending on the geographical origin of populations, growing conditions, and plant organ. The combination of anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, unsaturated fatty acids, sesquiterpenes, indole alkaloids, and epoxylignans determines the pronounced therapeutic and antioxidant potential of the cornflower and substantiates the feasibility of its plantation cultivation as a stable raw material base for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.
