Proposal for a Universal Combat Helmet Typology
Description
A Proposal for a Universal Morphological Classification System for Combat Helmets (3000 BC - 2025 AD)
Draft Version 1.0 - For Comment and Discussion
This paper proposes a universal, morphological classification system for combat helmets, spanning from the Bronze Age (c. 3000 BC) to modern ballistic headgear (2025 AD). Departing from traditional typologies limited by specific eras or cultural origins, this system treats shell geometry, face protection, and suspension systems as independent variables. By utilizing a standardized alphanumeric notation (Sx–Ax–Fx...), this taxonomy enables the objective description of physical form, facilitating cross-temporal comparison and the identification of convergent evolutionary trends in survivability design.
