Mindfulness to the Power of Five (M⁵): A Phenomenological–Integrative Model of Mindfulness, Experience, and Awareness
Description
Mindfulness has become a central construct across psychology, healthcare, education, and leadership studies. Despite its widespread adoption, contemporary discourse often leaves unspecified a foundational question: when one is mindful, what exactly is one mindful of? This conceptual ambiguity limits theoretical precision and weakens translational applications.
This paper introduces Mindfulness to the Power of Five (M⁵), a phenomenological–integrative model that specifies the core dimensions of human experience to which mindfulness may be applied. Drawing on three principal lineages—Buddhist phenomenology, contemporary mindfulness-based interventions, and cognitive-behavioral traditions—the M⁵ framework articulates five fundamental dimensions of phenomenal experience: perception, affect (feeling and emotion), cognition, action, and awareness.
In addition, the model distinguishes five functional modes of awareness, ranging from immersive engagement to open, non-object-centered awareness. The framework incorporates Needs, Purpose, and Values (NPV) as an orienting compass within awareness, and articulates five transformative powers that describe the functional effects of sustained mindful engagement. Neuroimaging research supports the differential engagement of brain networks corresponding to these phenomenological distinctions. By clarifying both the structure of experience and the dynamics of awareness, M⁵ reframes mindfulness as a precise, trainable capacity operating across multiple experiential layers. The paper presents theoretical foundations, phenomenological justification, comparison with existing models, measurement proposals, and applied implications, positioning M⁵ as a unifying conceptual contribution to contemporary mindfulness theory.
