Description

Leadership research has traditionally emphasized competencies, styles, and decision-making processes, yet it has devoted comparatively limited attention to the leader's capacity for self-orientation while acting under pressure. In contemporary organizational contexts characterized by uncertainty, rapid transformation, and sustained performance demands, leaders frequently adapt externally while becoming internally disoriented. This loss of self-orientation undermines resilience, turns adaptation into reactivity, and renders organizational transformation difficult to sustain.

This paper introduces the Personal Leadership Compass, a phenomenologically informed heuristic designed to support self-orientation in decision-making and action. Rather than offering prescriptive rules or normative guidance, the Compass functions as an orienting device that enables leaders to remain internally coherent while navigating complexity, uncertainty, and change. The framework conceptualizes dissatisfaction, hesitation, and setbacks not as failures but as informational signals indicating a need for reorientation.

The paper develops the conceptual foundations of the Personal Leadership Compass, clarifies its core components, and situates it within existing leadership and decision-making literature. It argues that self-orientation depends not only on reflective practices but also on moments of pause, stillness, and non-judgmental presence—grounded in mindfulness—that allow experience to integrate prior to interpretation. Through such openness, authentic needs, purposes, and values emerge without contrivance, enabling the kind of inner transformation and recalibration that neither automatic processing nor deliberate reflection can produce alone. The paper concludes by outlining implications for leadership development and executive education, particularly in relation to adaptation, resilience, and organizational transformation.
