Ce travail formalise une thèse centrale : l’émotion se fabrique par narration compensatoire. Entre un signal et l’émotion, le cerveau produit un microrécit qui donne une forme à l’indétermination et rend l’expérience praticable. Face aux signaux sous déterminés, et plus largement face aux situations qui restent partiellement ouvertes, cette micronarration se relance en boucle jusqu’à imposer une configuration narrativo corporelle suffisamment stable pour générer une valence émotionnelle exploitable pour l’action. Le récit ne suit pas l’émotion. Le parcours émotionnel émerge de cette opération.
Cette narration ne commente rien. Elle opère.
Le modèle formalise un point aveugle qui traverse une grande partie des cadres mobilisés en psychologie de l’émotion, de Festinger à Barrett, de Lazarus à Frijda. Le point aveugle tient à une cause simple : l’émotion est traitée comme un donné à expliquer, à évaluer, à catégoriser, à moduler. L’instant de fabrication, le moment où une situation ouverte devient une forme émotionnelle praticable, reste peu isolé comme opération autonome. La narration compensatoire prend ce moment comme objet central et en décrit l’architecture.
Le texte en tire des implications cliniques, notamment après trauma, en posant le détricotage des microrécits, par explicitation et transformation, comme levier de travail. Comprendre le régime ne transforme pas le régime. La portée dépasse le trauma. Elle vise un monde saturé de signaux évaluatifs partiels et ambigus, où la relance devient la norme, et où l’émotion se produit à la chaîne.
V2 : verrouillages et durcissements conceptuels, périmètre explicite du modèle, niveau d’analyse fonctionnel psychologique, distinction opératoire narration versus appraisal, statut épistémique assumé, critères de testabilité et conditions de mise à l’épreuve. Intégration critique du modèle de régulation émotionnelle (Gross, 1998b ; 2015b) pour préciser la distinction entre régulation séquentielle et génération narrative. Développement de la critique de la « situation close » : ajout de la notion de sédimentation pour décrire la latence des configurations narrativo-affectives, par opposition à la linéarité temporelle des modèles d'appraisal classiques.

This work formalizes a central thesis: emotion is fabricated through compensatory narration. Between a signal and felt emotion, the brain produces a micro-narrative that gives form to indeterminacy and makes experience actionable. When facing underdetermined signals, and more broadly when situations remain partially open, this micro-narration loops until it imposes a narrativo-corporeal configuration stable enough to generate an actionable emotional valence for action. Narrative does not follow emotion. Emotional trajectories emerge from this operation.
This narration does not comment. It operates.
The model formalizes a blind spot running through most frameworks in emotion psychology, from Festinger to Barrett, from Lazarus to Frijda. The blind spot stems from a simple cause: emotion is treated as a given to be explained, evaluated, categorized, or modulated. The fabrication moment—when an open situation becomes an actionable emotional form—is rarely isolated as an autonomous operation. Compensatory narration takes this moment as its central object and describes its architecture. The text draws clinical implications, particularly post-trauma, positioning the untangling of micro-narratives, through explication and transformation, as therapeutic leverage. Understanding the regime does not transform the regime. The scope extends beyond trauma. It targets a world saturated with partial and ambiguous evaluative signals, where relaunching becomes the norm, and where emotion is mass-produced.
V2: conceptual lock-ins and strengthened claims, explicit model scope, a functional psychological level of analysis, an operational distinction between narration and appraisal, an explicitly assumed epistemic status, and criteria of testability with conditions for putting the model to the test. Critical integration of the emotion regulation framework (Gross, 1998b; 2015b) to clarify the distinction between sequential regulation and narrative generation. Further development of the critique of the “closed situation”: addition of the notion of sedimentation to describe the latency of narrativo-affective configurations, in contrast with the temporal linearity of classic appraisal models.
