Description

Article Summary

This article analyses transformations in the global music industry through an autoethnographic case study of independent artist and entrepreneur Dr. Oliver Sean Alvares. The study examines how traditional industry gatekeeping structures have been challenged by digital distribution platforms, direct-to-fan engagement, and artist-led entrepreneurship. Using qualitative reflective analysis supported by documented career milestones, industry chart data, media coverage, and existing scholarly literature, the article explores the opportunities and constraints facing independent musicians operating outside major label systems. Particular attention is given to the organisational and strategic practices of W.O.A. International as an example of sustained independent operation within international markets. The research situates individual experience within broader structural changes affecting production, distribution, and monetisation in contemporary music economies. The findings contribute to interdisciplinary discussions in music industry studies, cultural economics, and creative entrepreneurship by providing empirical insight into independent pathways and emerging forms of industry participation.
