Assessment and treatment of reflux-like symptoms in the community: a multidisciplinary perspective

Reflux-like symptoms are among the most common reasons for consultation in community healthcare settings. This article provides a multidisciplinary overview of the assessment and management of reflux-like symptoms in the community, integrating perspectives from primary care, gastroenterology and pharmacy practice. It reviews evidence-based diagnostic approaches, highlights the importance of symptom characterization and identification of alarm features, and discusses therapeutic strategies beyond acid suppression, including rational use of proton pump inhibitors and alternative non-pharmacological and pharmacological options. The work emphasizes the role of community-based healthcare professionals, particularly pharmacists, in early assessment, patient education and appropriate referral, aiming to optimize symptom control, improve patient experience and support more efficient use of healthcare resources.
