Description

This dataset supports the paper “Antibiotics Confound Breath-Based Respiratory Disease Detection in Calves” (PLOS ONE). It contains breath volatile organic compound (VOC) emission rates and clinical metadata collected from calves during two experimental phases:

  • Tab 1 – BRD Trial:
Emission rates of individual VOCs measured in the breath of healthy and diseased calves using PTR-QiTOF (quadrupole ion guide). Units: µg animal⁻¹ h⁻¹, except formaldehyde (mg animal⁻¹ h⁻¹) and CO₂ (g animal⁻¹ h⁻¹). Metadata includes date/time, animal ID, health status, true disease classification, medications, respiration rate, rectal temperature, clinical scores (nose, eyes, ears, cough, total), and age.

  • Tab 2 – Antibiotic Trial:
    Breath emission rates for four VOCs before and after administration of Alamycin LA300, measured at –48 h, –24 h (baseline), and 1 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 96 h post-treatment.

File format: Excel (.xlsx) with two tabs. Column headers include metadata and VOC formulas (protonated species).
Instrument: Proton Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (PTR-QiTOF).
