Updated Definition of Artificial Intelligence
Description
This paper proposes an updated, measurable definition of artificial intelligence that establishes concrete performance benchmarks: AI systems must either outperform average human professionals within their professional culture, achieve comparable results with lower energy costs and/or faster execution, or both—while requiring only exceptional human intervention. The definition includes eight explanatory notes addressing general AI inclusion, subjective quality assessment, energy efficiency considerations, and the relationship between intellectual challenge and perceived AI quality, with a comprehensive reference framework connecting to both foundational and contemporary AI research spanning from Turing (1950) to recent advances in reinforcement learning and deep learning.
