Abstract

Literature has been regarded as a mirror of society that reflects the cultural, political and economic conditions of contemporary times. Literature is not merely a source of entertainment but it is a reflection of the economic transactions, trade practices as well as results of commerce in society. Trade and commerce hold a central place among these as they have put impact on the evolution of civilizations, human interactions and cultural exchanges. The present paper tries to explore the way how literature serves as an emblem of economic thought and commercial practices which analyses texts from ancient, medieval, colonial to the modern times across diverse cultures. The present research work tries to demonstrate how literature provides a record of economic life as well as a realistic picture of materialism, globalization and socio-economic structures through various examples from Indian epics and medieval Bhakti literature to Shakespeare’s plays and modern novels. Ultimately, literature is shown to be a commentary on commerce. It offers a unique insight to the interdependence of art and economy. The present research work also strives to highlight of the relationship between literature and commerce which portrays trade in ancient times. The present paper tries to explore how literature reflects trade and commerce by analysing key works. It becomes evident that literature not only records commercial activities but also interprets them as vital forces shaping identity, power and progress. Modern literature continues this tradition engaging with issues such as consumerism, capitalism, industrialization and economic discrepancy in the globalized marketplace. The present study tries to prove that literature is not just a historical document but a sensitive mirror of economic and cultural changes in society.
