Enhancing Interprofessional Collaboration: Adapting SOAP Documentation for Yoga Therapy in Integrative Healthcare

ABSTRACT

Background: Yoga therapy has emerged as a recognized complementary health profession, yet lacks a standardized clinical documentation framework that bridges traditional yogic paradigms with contemporary healthcare communication.

Objective: This systematic Approach aims to: 1) Evaluate current assessment methodologies in yoga therapy research and practice; 2) Assess the applicability of the SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan) framework to yoga therapy; 3) Propose an integrated SOAP-Yoga Therapy model.

Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic search across PubMed, Scopus, PEDro, Cochrane Library, and IAYT's repository from 2000-2023. Inclusion criteria: peer-reviewed studies, clinical trials, or methodological papers addressing yoga therapy assessment or clinical documentation. Quality assessment was performed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT).

Results: Of 2,457 identified records, 48 met inclusion criteria. Analysis revealed: 1) 85% of yoga therapy studies documented interventions but lacked structured clinical reasoning frameworks; 2) Only 12% utilized standardized documentation formats; 3) Significant positive outcomes were reported when structured assessment guided intervention (p<0.05 in 78% of controlled trials). Thematic analysis identified five key domains for integration: holistic data collection, multidimensional assessment, individualized planning, progress tracking, and interdisciplinary communication.

Conclusion: The SOAP framework is both applicable and beneficial for structuring yoga therapy practice. We present a validated SOAP-Yoga Therapy Integration Model that maintains yogic philosophical integrity while enhancing clinical rigor. This model provides a template for standardized documentation, facilitates research, and improves healthcare integration.
