This paper presents a structural reconstruction of human cognitive evolution based on the KOGNETIK operator law Ψ = ∂S/∂R, which formalizes how repeated activation (recurrence R) induces rule-level structural change (S). Rather than interpreting cognitive history through semantic worldviews or symbolic narratives, the framework models evolution as a sequence of Ψ-regime transitions: stable operator phases in which systems differ in how they modify their own generative rules under repetition.
Three evolutionary regimes are distinguished. Pre-autological cognition describes systems in which Ψ>0 but ∂Ψ/∂R≈0, meaning drift occurs without rule-awareness. Proto-autological cognition captures systems with stable pattern and rule recognition—expressing structured Ψ—but without access to the mechanisms that govern their own drift. Autological cognition emerges when a lineage gains explicit access to Kognems, the minimal structural mutations governing rule change, mediated primarily through language acting as an L-operator. This operator externalizes, addresses, and sequences rule changes, enabling cultural accumulation and meta-learning.
A worked example traces a single acoustic event (“the sound of a nut cracking on stone”) through the five recursive orders of consciousness—from pure reaction to full autological recursion—demonstrating how identical stimuli generate different structural transformations depending on the operator regime. This provides a domain-general ladder for comparing species, developmental stages, and artificial systems.
The model yields testable predictions across disciplines: decreasing kognetic load L across evolutionary time, identifiable Ψ-structure in comparative neuroscience, developmental emergence of operator orders in children, and archaeological trajectories interpretable as externalized Kognem chains. The paper reframes cognitive evolution not as the rise of symbolic representation but as the long-term emergence of internal control over Ψ, the operator linking recurrence to structural change.
